A solution for this problem is to start Cubase and to open a new project. Save this new blank project. Then open the corrupted Cubase project at the same time, but do not active it. Rename and Save the unactivated project. Close Cubase, open it again, and then try the old project saved under the new file name. If it opens, save immediately with yet another different file name.
